College to Corporate

JOB – a really big achievement for an individual after their graduation. And the best way an Engineering grad can get his job is through the campus recruitment. Like many others, I too had a good fortune to get placed in an IT firm through my college campus recruitment and surely it was the best day ever. Corporate life is what I was waiting for.

The excitement to start a new phase as an IT professional was quite much more than one could expect. This new world stands in front of you, waiting to make you a part of it. The only things that you move along with are the values and principles your college has given you and the articles which inspire and educate you like “Do’s and Don’ts on first day of your job”. The college to corporate journey was thus to begin.
My first day too was what I looked upon eagerly. How the culture would be? How much should I change to adapt to this professional life? etc. were the questions I was travelling with. And not much to my surprise I found answer to these questions in just few days. With sessions of Head of Departments across the organisation, we were exposed to working of every department. This surely had a hidden meaning of “Know it all”! Even if you work for a particular department, you have to know the other processes well which surely contradicted our college behaviour of knowing only what your stream had to offer. Calling people by addressing them ‘Sir’/’Madam’ is what my firm doesn’t follow. For all the freshers with me, it was quite difficult to digest initially. Calling a person’s name with experience equal to your age was quite difficult. But eventually we won this feat.

Another important change that we really face in this new phase is the code of conduct. How you talk, what you wear, how you sit, etc. now talks a lot about you and your personality. In college days, shouting, laughing loudly, wearing what you get from the cupboard at the first sight; all this was now to change. You have to be very mindful about what you do and how you do. Though difficult, this change is to be brought; as one of our HR person said “All these changes will be a bit difficult to adapt but they are for your good!”
And last and the most important change that we need to bring is about punctuality and time management. Gone are the days when assignments could be submitted a day or two late by buttering teachers. Here once said, it is said. The work to be completed on a particular day has to be ready on that day. Delays simply show how poor you are in managing your most valuable resource – TIME.

The only concept that we need to follow here is LEARN TO UNLEARN AND RELEARN
For this corporate is for the survivors and explorers! Hoping to have a wonderful journey with much to learn.
& for others hope that you too have a good Professional Life!!

  1. The concept you posted about learn to unlearn and relearn is so cool. I relate my job profile with this concept. You captioned it very delightfully.
