TRUST

Trust is like an eraser; it gets smaller and smaller with every mistake.” - Anon

Well this quote surely defines trust completely.

Have you ever wondered how we human beings have started doubting more and trusting less?

I came across this thought after I witnessed the following 2 incidents:

Incident 1:

Me and my family went for a drive to a small hill nearby. We were at the hilltop where there were very few people around.  While we were enjoying the small tunnel that passed through the hill and clicking some #nightlife pictures, we saw an old lady at a distance.

Her presence was not much of a concern till the time she was away. The moment she started approaching us, a wave of panic crossed our minds. General human habits - when you see some stranger at night, you are prone to doubt their genuineness. She started speaking to us about something in a language quite alien to us! Because of her constant nagging and following us, we finally decided to leave the place. But later we all had thoughts as to what if she needed help and genuinely wanted to leave that place?

With these thoughts we left, and in a while the incident just vanished from our minds. We then decided to go to a place where there would be people around and some suspicious strangers won’t bother us.

 Incident 2:

We then went to the NMMC Office. There is a beautiful lawn made for people to sit and chill. Many people visit this place to enjoy the night! We settled at a place and had got rid of the earlier incident. Some talks and giggles made their way and suddenly we saw 2 guys sitting on a bike staring right at us. Suddenly, the detective inside us rose! “Their number plate is not visible…..what if they are here to loot people or are they stalking us!” After a while, their expressions started changing, suddenly smiling as if they saw some known person. We turned and realized there was a guy walking towards our side and in a while, he joined these 2 guys on bike. They had a pep talk and they left.

The above 2 incidents surely showed me how much distrust we show in people around us. This causes fear and doubting consequently. Even before understanding the situation or background, we suspect people.
Is it because of the criminal incidences that we see and hear around that make us trust less? Or is it just normal human behavior?

Would you love to know your perspective!

  1. Great post Sayli !!!

I believe society deeply impacts the "natural" human behavior of each era. Each and every situation/act of us subconciously assesses the risk involved in it.

But then with the given context, finally it's upto individual's choice (mostly driven by risk parameter) to select among:
*Distrust first & then apologize if wrong OR
    *To trust and repent later.

Probably based on current societal norms in which we adapt, willingly or unwilling, the first one fits in better.

  4. Nice observation! Trust these days has become very obscure but we aren't really to blame for it. As human societies have evolved, we as a species have distanced ourselves from our true form. In our childhood days when we had no social networking platforms, no internet, we were very much closer to the actual human nature. Our synapses made better links with our ground realities and emotions with more and more human societal interactions. Now although our virtual connections have improved way beyond expectation, our world in essence has become smaller owing to very little understanding of human psychology. This in effect becomes a breeding ground benefitting our primal selfish instincts and strengthening the sense of 'Me'. Anyone or anything that stands in the way of desires and cravings of this 'Me' naturally becomes an outsider and the mind becomes defensive.

Untoward incidents that happen now also have a role to play but these incidents are not new, they existed before too. People and situations are more or less the same, it's just the way we perceive the world has changed. It's sad and unfortunate that we can't open our hearts out as easily as before coz the only person we trust is us and nobody else. I sometimes wonder if this is good or bad but seldom can I arrive at a convincing argument. Creation and evolution are relentless forces of nature that just happen, they have no single purpose whatsoever.

It's reassuring when questions of 'Trust', 'Religion', 'Faith', 'Love' etc., arise in the human mind, it gives a glimpse of hope. Maybe someday we start connecting back to our true forms, maybe that's where we are heading to, maybe that is what evolution is meant to be.

    1. Beautiful thought Sire.. !!! Completely agree to everything... Indeed it's reassuring when questions and discussions pertaining to 'Trust', 'Religion', 'Faith' etc arise - there is a chance of human re-connection in its true form.

    2. Hey, so great to hear such diverse thoughts and quite a closer look to the current situation that we are in. Glad that my blog was a thought provoking for you. Thanks a ton for such amazing words. Hope that we someday find the re-connection!

  5. This is a good one! Yes it has not become a normal human tendency coz of all the "Stranger incident" news that we hear on daily basis. I feel we can change this if we give the benefit of the doubt to "Positive" - meaning, we can always think and assume about a positive outcome whenever in doubt.
